Demolition work started once again on the evening of 8 November in Dalmandi area of Varanasi. This time, the shop on which PWD’s hammer was used is said to belong to the family of BJP worker Abhishek Chaurasia.

This shop owned by Mohan Prasad Chaurasia and Vijay Prasad was completely demolished by the administration with hammer and drilling machine. The purpose of this action is said to be to make the road leading to Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple more accessible by widening the road.

Sacrifice for development is acceptable

Earlier on October 29 also, demolition action was taken at a shop in Dalmandi. This campaign started for the second time on Saturday. Abhishek Chaurasia, who was present on the spot, said that he was informed in advance and compensation has also been provided. He said, “Our shop is 95 years old, many generations have run the family from here. There are many memories associated with it, but we also accept this sacrifice for development.” Abhishek is an active worker of Bharatiya Janata Party and he clearly said that he has no complaint against anyone.

Shopkeepers expressed disagreement

However, other shopkeepers have expressed disagreement over this action. While talking to ABP Live, he said that the compensation given is very less. According to him, it is not possible to start a new business or buy an alternative shop with this amount of money. Some people also alleged that Dalmandi area has been deliberately selected in this campaign, while other routes could have been widened to reach the temple.

action taken under administrative supervision

The entire demolition action was carried out in the presence of the local administration and police force. Officials say that this campaign is part of the ongoing development work in the city and no one has been personally targeted. According to the government’s plan, the road leading to Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple via Dalmandi will now become wider and more convenient. However, it remains to be seen how this campaign will proceed further amidst the disagreement among the shopkeepers.
