The controversy regarding constitutional amendment is continuously increasing in Pakistan. The judiciary of the country is openly protesting against the 27th amendment of the Constitution. In this series, on Saturday (November 15, 2025), senior judge of Lahore High Court, Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza resigned. Justice Mirza’s tenure in the Lahore High Court was till 2028, but he resigned from his post, calling the 27th Amendment an attack on the Constitution and the judiciary and dangerous for the justice system of the country.
This move by Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza, senior judge of Lahore High Court, is being seen as a historic turning point in the justice system of Pakistan, as it is the first time in the history of the country that a High Court judge has resigned in protest against an amendment to the country’s constitution.
Senior judges of the Supreme Court also resigned
At the same time, before the resignation of Justice Shams, two senior judges of the Supreme Court, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Meenallah, also resigned against this amendment, calling it an attack on the Constitution and the judiciary.
Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is being accused of this entire controversy. Munir is being accused of trying to capture the Constitution of Pakistan by making constitutional changes.
What is the dispute about?,
The reason behind such a big controversy in Pakistan is the 27th Constitutional Amendment, under which a new Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has been established in the country. According to the amendment, now the FCC will hear all major cases related to the Constitution in the country and the existing Supreme Court has been limited to only civil and criminal cases. In such a situation, the judges of Pakistan say that due to this amendment, the Supreme Court will be snatched away from its first place status and will be placed in the second line.
