Test cricket has always been considered a game of calm and patience. Here the batsmen prefer to stay at the crease for long innings. However, there is one player who surprised the whole world by hitting a six on the very first ball of this format. No other batsman has been able to repeat this feat till date. This record shows how much strength, confidence and ability to take risks the batsman had.
A six that became history
On 13 November 2012, West Indies’ legendary opener Chris Gayle had performed a unique feat in Mirpur. He sent the very first ball of the test match against Bangladesh across the boundary. Bowler Sohag Ghazi was bowling the first test over of his career and Universe Boss was standing in front. Ghazi bowled the ball, and Gayle without any hesitation converted it over long-on for six. This moment became not just a shot, but a unique record in Test history.
The first over became a ‘highlight package’
Gayle did not stop here. He played another big shot in the same over and scored a total of 18 runs. However, the interesting thing was that later it was Sohag Ghazi who dismissed Chris Gayle for 24 runs. Despite this, this over-test has been recorded as one of the memorable moments in history.
Top hitters of sixes in test
Chris Gayle’s name is also included among the batsmen who have hit the most sixes in Test cricket. He has hit 98 sixes in Tests and is at fifth position in this list. Above him are big players like Tim Southee, Adam Gilchrist, Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes.
Also scored two triple centuries, there is an empire in T20
Gayle has been famous not only for big shots but also for playing long innings. He scored two triple centuries in Tests, one against South Africa and the other against Sri Lanka. 7214 runs and best score of 333 in 103 test matches are proof of his class and talent.
Talking about T20, he stands at a different level there. With 22 centuries, 88 half-centuries and more than 14 thousand runs, he is still considered the biggest legend of T20 cricket.
