Steam Inhalation Risks: The country’s capital Delhi is currently struggling with pollution. In such a situation, people are suffering from various types of diseases. There are many people who are suffering from cold due to pollution. For this they are taking steam so that this can be avoided. This is because it is believed that taking steam means inhaling hot vapor of water. Its effect is that the respiratory tubes open a little and the accumulated mucus starts loosening.

In the environment of pollution and cold, the air becomes so dry that the membranes of our respiratory tubes also start drying up, which can reduce blood flow and increase stiffness. The warmth of the steam adds moisture to the air, which makes breathing easier and helps soften the mucus accumulated in the lungs and airways and expel it. Let us tell you how dangerous it is for you.

Does this cure cold completely?

Taking steam is one of those home remedies that people adopt the most. In case of blocked nose, cold or sinus problem, this treatment is often recommended first. In many places it is also claimed that taking steam provides many benefits beyond these common problems. But doctors clearly say that steam does not cure any infection like cold or flu.

Dr. Manoj Sharma, Senior Consultant (Internal Medicine), Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, told Financial Express, “Steam definitely provides relief in some conditions, especially those suffering from congestion, sinusitis or mild cold. The warm, moist air calms down the inflammation and soothes the nasal passages.”

He further says that taking steam can provide some relief, but it should not be done excessively because it is not the real cure for any disease. If there is any serious problem, persistent problem or symptoms are increasing, then a doctor should be consulted without delay.

What is its harm?

Taking steam proves beneficial for us in many ways, but sometimes it can also be harmful. By inhaling steam, the air becomes very hot and humid, which can sometimes damage the inner layer of the lungs. Apart from this, in patients suffering from asthma, allergy or respiratory disease, inhaling steam can worsen the condition because hot steam suddenly triggers the airways.
