China is designing an artificial island weighing 78,000 tons to withstand nuclear explosions. It is a maneuverable semi-submersible and double-hulled platform that can easily accommodate 238 people for up to 4 months without the need for any new equipment. Its infrastructure is as big as China’s Fujian aircraft carrier and will become operational in 2028. This will be the world’s first such floating island.
It can withstand 6-9 meter high waves and Category 17 storms, (the most powerful tropical cyclone) as well as rough seas. “We are working rapidly to complete the design and construction work, and we aim to bring it into operation by 2028,” Lin Zhongqin, an academic leading the project, told Economic Information Daily.
According to a report in the South China Morning Post, scientists say the facility uses “metamaterial” sandwich panels that are capable of “transforming destructive shocks into mild pressure”.
What did the SJTU professor tell?
“This major deep-sea scientific facility is designed for long-term habitation, in all weather conditions. Its superstructure has critical compartments that ensure emergency power, communications and navigation control, making nuclear blast protection extremely essential for these locations,” the team led by Professor Yang Deqing of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) wrote.
Deep-sea all-weather resident floating research facility
Let us tell you that it is called Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility. It is China’s “mobile island floating in the distant sea”, built after a decade of research and planning. The island will be 138 meters long and 85 meters wide (125 feet long and 279 feet wide), with the main deck rising 45 meters above the waterline.
