Pakistan Army is often in search of a coup or tries to place its favorite people at the top of power. Pakistan is infamous in the whole world for this. This time the Pakistani Army was given supreme power without doing all this. Army Chief Asim Munir took over as the country’s first Chief of Defense Force (CDF) on Thursday (27 November 2025).
Munir became the head of all three armies
This post has been created through the 27th Amendment in the Pakistani Constitution. Under this, Asim Munir is now the head of all three forces i.e. Army, Air Force and Navy for the next five years. These amendments, passed by the Pakistani Parliament on 1 November 2025, abolished the post of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), the most senior role in the three services. This post was created in 1976 by former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto after Pakistan’s defeat in the India-Pakistan war of 1971.
The post of CJCSC was removed from Pakistan Army.
With the retirement of current CJCSC General Sahir Shamshad Mirza on November 27, 2025, the post’s decades-long presence in Pakistan’s defense structure comes to an end. Since the creation of Pakistan in 1947, there have been ups and downs between civilian and military rule. The last military leader to rule openly here was Pervez Musharraf, who took power in a coup in 1999 and served as president until 2008.
Munir’s control over nuclear weapons
Even though a government elected by the people is in power in Pakistan for some time now, the influence of the army on the political and economic sectors is still deep. It can be understood that both of them are running the government together. The 27th Amendment tilted this balance towards the military. Along with this, Asim Munir has been made the chief of the three armies as well as in-charge of the Nuclear Weapon System. The overall control of the three armies has also been removed from the President and the Cabinet and handed over to the CDF.
Manir’s tenure extended, lifetime exemption from lawsuits
The time limit for Asim Munir’s tenure as Chief of Defense Forces has also been rescheduled. Under the constitutional amendments, his tenure has been extended till at least 2030. He was scheduled to retire on November 27, but now his tenure will continue in his new post till 2030. These changes also provided Munir with legal protection equal to that of the President of the country. Like the President, the Field Marshal will also be given lifetime immunity from any legal case. This security has also been given to the Air Force and Navy chiefs.
Munir’s interference in Shahbaz government
Asim Munir has also been the head of the Military Intelligence Department and later Pakistan’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). In the year 2019, during the tenure of the then Prime Minister Imran Khan, Munir was removed from the post of Intelligence Chief after only 8 months of tenure, the reason for which was never made public. Munir’s fortunes changed when MPs ousted Imran Khan from power. After this, Shahbaz Sharif government handed over the command of the army to him. After this, despite being defeated by India during Operation Sindoor, he was promoted to the post of Field Marshal.
According to defense analyst and retired Lieutenant General Naeem Khalid Lodhi, Field Marshal Asim Munir has become the most powerful person in Pakistan. According to the report of news agency AFP, he said, “The leaders of Pakistan are responsible for making it the most powerful. They have put the future of Pakistan at stake for the sake of few interests.”
