To become an Assistant Professor, it is necessary to have a master’s degree in the subject from a recognized university. Minimum 55% marks are required in Master. A relaxation of 5% is given to Scheduled Caste/Tribe and Physically Handicapped (PwD) candidates. That means minimum marks of 50% are sufficient for them.

NET or SET exam

The next step after a master’s degree is to pass the National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Eligibility Test (SET). NET exam is conducted by UGC and after passing you can apply to any college or university in the country. SET exam is conducted in some states, in which successful candidates can apply to colleges of their state. Clearing NET/SET is a necessary qualification to become an Assistant Professor if you do not have a PhD.

What about PhD?

If you have a PhD degree in the relevant subject, you are not required to give NET or SET. As per UGC rules, PhD holders are directly eligible for the post of Assistant Professor.

How much is the salary?

If we talk about the salary of Assistant Professor, they get very good salary right from the beginning in government institutions. The basic salary in government universities is Rs 56,100 per month. Apart from this, some other facilities are also provided to them. On the basis of experience, their salary increases and the position also changes from time to time. Assistant professors first become associate professors and then they also become professors.
