Multiple Pesticides in Produce: Common fruits and vegetables sold in Britain have been found to contain pesticides that have been linked to serious diseases such as cancer. This has created great concern about people’s health. Last year, the government tested 3,482 samples of food items, among which grapes were found to be the most suspicious. Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN UK) analyzed these samples and found a total of 123 different chemicals in 17 types of fruits and vegetables. Of these, 42 were pesticides that are said to be linked to cancer, and 21 were found to be chemicals that can affect the body’s hormonal system.
In a sample of Sultana grapes from Turkey, 16 different pesticides were found, which also included PFA i.e. those forever chemicals. These chemicals do not break down in the environment for centuries and can accumulate in the body and cause great harm to health. Of the total 108 grape samples tested, it was found that more than one pesticide was present in 90 percent.
The same trend was seen in the testing of grapefruit; multiple pesticides were found in 99 percent of the 121 samples. Up to 10 types of chemicals were found in one kilogram of grapefruit sample.
Chemicals found in these also
Multiple pesticides were found in 79 percent of 24 Lyme samples. Apart from this, high levels of chemicals were also found in banana, capsicum, melon and chilli. 11 pesticides were found in a chilli sample and eight chemicals were found in a broccoli sample. According to the Government Environment Committee, residual pesticide waste was found in 46.67 percent of the samples tested in 2024. Most of these were within the legal limit, but 2.07 percent samples were found above the limit. However, the committee says that being above the limit is not necessarily immediately dangerous.
How are MRLs determined?
PAN UK argues that MRL is decided on the basis of only one chemical whereas the reality is that many chemicals are present in our food simultaneously. They say that we do not know what effect so many chemicals together have on the body. Sometimes their effect together can become even more poisonous, this is called ‘cocktail effect’. PAN UK revealed another shocking thing, 29 percent of the pesticides found in the investigation were such which are not allowed to be used in Britain. But these chemicals reach the UK market through fruits and vegetables coming from outside.
