Most Used English Letter: Whenever we write or speak, words come out of our mouth automatically and sentences are formed easily. But do you know that there is one letter in the English language which appears most frequently in speaking and writing? Let us know which letter it is and some interesting facts related to it.

Most used letter in English

The letter ‘E’ is most used in the English language. Studies based on large text samples, books, newspapers and spoken conversations show that ‘E’ accounts for about 11-12% of all letters used in English.

What is the reason behind this?

The most used word in English is ‘the’. This word alone makes a major contribution to the repetition of ‘E’. Apart from this, important pronouns like he, she, me, we and they also depend on some letter. Words like be and were would also disappear without it.

rules of grammar

English Grammar ‘E’ further strengthens it. Many plural nouns end in ‘-es’ and regular past tense verbs often end in ‘-ed’. These small things may seem trivial but they increase the number of times a letter appears in millions of sentences.

Why it matters in cryptography and puzzles

‘E’ plays a big role in cryptography. Code breakers often start decoding secret messages by identifying the most commonly used symbols. It is usually considered as ‘E’. This method, called frequency analysis, has been used for centuries to break encrypted texts and wartime codes.

A big language challenge

‘E’ is so important that ignoring it completely is considered the biggest challenge in English writing. Despite this, in 1939, writer Ernest Vincent Wright had achieved this impossible task by writing a complete novel named ‘Gadsby’. This novel was of about 50000 words and the letter ‘E’ was not used even once. Apart from ‘E’, ‘T’ is a letter which appears in about 9% of English texts and ‘A’ appears in about 8%.
