There is no sign of stopping the violence against leaders associated with student politics in Bangladesh. Just days after the death of Osman Hadi, the leading face of the 2024 student movement, another student leader was fatally attacked on Monday. This incident has further increased the already existing tension in the country.
Firing on student leader Motaleb Sikdar in Khulna
According to the report of Daily Star, National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Motaleb Sikdar was shot in Khulna on Monday. The attackers directly targeted his head. Motaleb is the Khulna Divisional Chief of NCP and the central organizer of NCP Shramik Shakti.
Hospitalized, condition stable
According to the police, the attack took place at around 11:45 in the morning. After being shot, Motaleb Sikdar was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Investigating officer Animesh Mandal of Sonadanga Model Police Station said that the bullet touched a part of the ear and came out. He said that at present Motaleb is out of danger.
Leaders are associated with the party formed from student movement
National Citizen Party was established on 28 February this year. This party was formed under the leadership of Students Against Discrimination and Jatiya Nagrik Samiti and is considered the first student-led political party of Bangladesh.
This party came into existence after the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power.
Violence spread across the country due to the death of Osman Hadi
Earlier, Osman Hadi, leader of the 2024 student movement, died on Thursday. He was injured by a bullet in an attack in Dhaka on 12 December. He was airlifted and admitted to the Neurosurgical ICU of Singapore General Hospital on 15 December for treatment, but he died on 18 December 2025.
Accused absconding, no arrest even after ultimatum
Bangladesh Police has said that they do not have any concrete information regarding the whereabouts of the main accused in Hadi’s murder. A day before this, Hadi’s party Inquilab Mancha had given a 24-hour ultimatum to the interim government and demanded ‘concrete progress’ in arresting the killers.
After the death of Usman Hadi, incidents of violence and vandalism were reported in many parts of Bangladesh. Stones were also pelted at the residence of the Indian Assistant High Commissioner in Chittagong. On Saturday, amid tight security, Hadi was laid to rest near the Dhaka University Mosque, near the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
