According to the report, a large number of Indian students are going abroad for higher education. This trend has further intensified in the year 2024 also. The special thing is that Canada, America, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany have emerged as the most preferred countries for Indian students.
NITI Aayog report shows that Canada remains the first choice of Indian students. In the year 2024, about 4.27 lakh Indian students went to Canada to study. The university, study environment and work opportunities here are attracting the students a lot. Canada’s easy visa process and job opportunities after studies are also considered to be the major reasons for this.
America and Britain also included in the top
America is in second place after Canada. According to the report, more than 3.37 lakh Indian students are studying in America. After this comes the United Kingdom, where 1.85 lakh Indian students are pursuing higher education. More than 1.22 lakh Indian students are studying in Australia and about 43 thousand Indian students are studying in Germany. These figures show that the preferences of Indian students have now spread to many countries.
India becomes the largest source country of students
It has been told in the report that India has currently become the largest student sending country in the world. In the year 2024, more than 13.35 lakh Indian students were studying abroad. At the same time, the number of youth in the age group of 18 to 23 years in India is about 15.5 crore, which is the highest in the world. This means that the number of students going abroad may increase further in the coming time.
Foreign students coming to study in India
The report also mentions foreign students coming to study in India. Data for 2021-22 are given in this report titled ‘Internationalization of Higher Education in India’. According to this, maximum number of foreign students came to study in India from Nepal, Afghanistan, America, Bangladesh and UAE. However, their number is much less as compared to Indian students going abroad.

According to the report, about 8.5 lakh Indian students studying in Canada, America, UK and Australia spent about Rs 2.9 lakh crore in the year 2023-24. This includes fees, accommodation, food and other expenses. This amount is also a big sign for the country’s economy.
The share of Indian students is increasing rapidly in some countries
The report also states that the number of Indian students has increased rapidly in some small countries. There are 17.4 percent Indian students in Latvia, 15.3 percent in Ireland and 10.1 percent in Germany. It is clear that students are now looking for new options apart from traditional countries.
