A serious controversy related to sexual harassment and alleged love jihad has come to light in Lucknow-based King George Medical University (KGMU). The accused is Rameez Uddin Nayak, junior resident doctor of the pathology department, against whom the female resident doctor has filed a complaint. The matter pertains to the appearance before the Vishakha Committee on December 22 and the administrative action thereafter.
On the complaint of the victim, the police have registered an FIR against the accused resident doctor. According to the information, the victim had lodged a complaint at Chowk Kotwali, on the basis of which the police filed an FIR. It is alleged that the accused doctor deceived the victim and had a relationship with her. After receiving the complaint, the police has started investigation.
After the FIR was registered, the accused resident doctor is said to be absconding. The police is searching for him and raids are being conducted at possible places. Police officials say that the matter is being investigated seriously and further legal action will be taken after the investigation is completed. At present, efforts to arrest the accused have been intensified.
What happened and who was involved?
On December 22, both the accused boy and the victim girl appeared before the Vishakha Committee constituted by the KGMU administration. The accused claimed before the committee that the relationship between the two was based on mutual consent. When the committee questioned the accused about his marriage, he said that he was not married.
However, other colleagues from the same department told the committee that the accused was married. After this, the college administration asked for an affidavit from the accused in writing that he was not married, while the victim was asked to present evidence related to her allegations.
Doctor Rameez suspended with immediate effect
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Internal Complaints Committee of KGMU took it into cognizance under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2013. According to the order of Dean Academics Professor Virendra Atma, the presence of the accused doctor on duty pending the investigation could have affected the fair investigation. On this basis, with the approval of the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak was suspended with immediate effect.
During the suspension period, the accused will not discharge any official work and will not be able to enter the university or hospital premises without written permission. He will be allowed to be present only in the investigation proceedings and the headquarters will remain KGMU, Lucknow.
What is the whole matter and the current situation
According to the complaint, the accused doctor is accused of hiding the truth of his marriage and luring a Hindu female resident doctor into a love affair and later pressurizing her to convert. Due to this, the matter has reached the allegations of Love Jihad.
The college administration had given the accused time till today to submit the affidavit, but since this morning the accused is neither available in the college premises nor at his home. At present, the Vishakha Committee investigation is going on and the KGMU administration says that an impartial decision will be taken on the basis of all the facts and evidence.
