Senior party leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor has reacted to the uproar created by the post of Congress Rajya Sabha MP and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh. Shashi Tharoor supported the views of his party colleague Digvijay Singh and said that the organization should be strengthened.
Shashi Tharoor said this during the 140th Foundation Day program of the party organized on Sunday (December 28, 2025) at the Congress Headquarters. During the event, Tharoor was sitting next to Digvijay Singh at the party’s Indira Bhawan headquarters and shared views with the senior leader.
Digvijay Singh had given a statement regarding PM Modi
Digvijay Singh created a political stir on Saturday (December 27, 2025) when he praised the organizational strength of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While sharing an old picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he had said how a grassroots worker, learning by sitting at the feet of his leaders, became the Chief Minister and then the Prime Minister.
Digvijay Singh said after the controversy over the statement
During this, he also raised the issue of strengthening the Congress organization at the grassroots level and said that this is very important to compete with the ruling BJP and remove it from power. A day after the controversy over the statement, Digvijay Singh said that he has said whatever he had to say. He said, ‘I have been with the Congress Party for 50 years and I have fought these communal forces in the Assembly, Parliament or organization.’
He claimed, ‘I have fundamental disagreement with him and I oppose his ideology. I have fought against such people and will continue to fight. When asked to comment on his statement given on Saturday (December 27, 2025), he said, ‘Every organization needs strength.’

When Shashi Tharoor was asked to comment on this issue, he said, ‘The organization should be strengthened, there is no doubt about it.’ When asked about sitting next to Digvijay Singh and discussing this topic between the two, Tharoor said, ‘We keep talking to each other, we are friends and keep talking to each other.’
He told journalists, ‘Today is the 140th foundation day of Congress. This is a very important occasion for the party. This is the day when we remember our glorious history and the contribution of the party to the country.

At the same time, Shashi Tharoor said in a post on social media platform X, ‘Today is the 140th anniversary of the establishment of the Indian National Congress (INC). This is the same organization which played a decisive role in leading India’s freedom struggle from British rule.

He said, ‘From its first convention in the year 1885 till today, the Congress Party has remained a strong cornerstone of the country’s democratic journey and political development. Today this occasion was celebrated with solemnity and mutual harmony at Indira Bhawan.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said, ‘I feel that BJP is distorting the essence of Digvijay’s post. We do not need to learn anything from the Sangh, which spreads hatred and takes inspiration from the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi’s murderer (Nathuram) Godse.
Shrinet claimed, ‘We are the Indian National Congress and we fought the freedom struggle against the injustice and exploitation of the British rule and converted it into a mass movement. We do not need to learn anything from anyone, rather others should learn from us.
At the same time, senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid said, ‘There is a lot in Congress and others should learn from Congress only. We have absolutely no need to learn from RSS, because we oppose that ideology. While another leader Rajeev Shukla said, ‘The roots of this party are so deep that they can never be erased.’
