Former Prime Minister and President of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia, considered a strong pillar of Bangladesh politics, passed away today at the age of 80. He breathed his last in a private hospital in Dhaka. Khaleda Zia, who gave direction to the country’s politics for a long time, had the honor of being the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Khaleda Zia was born in the year 1945 in Jalpaiguri (present-day India). In the year 1959, she was married to Ziaur Rahman, who later became the President of Bangladesh. In 1981, Ziaur Rehman was assassinated by military officers, after which Khaleda Zia’s life took a new turn.
Entry into politics and journey to power
After the murder of her husband, Khaleda Zia entered active politics. She became the President of BNP in the year 1984. Under her leadership, the opposition won the 1991 elections and Khaleda Zia became the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She had been PM three times. His first term was from March 1991 to February 1996, his second term lasted for a few weeks after February 1996 and his third term was from October 2001 to October 2006.
