Taking a big decision before the T20 World Cup 2026, Bangladesh Cricket has made Liton Das the captain of its team. He got this responsibility after formally being handed over the command of the T20 International team in May 2025. Wicketkeeper-batsman Liton replaced Nazmul Hossain Shanto and will now lead Bangladesh in the tournament. The special thing is that Liton Das comes from the Hindu community and due to reasons related to this, he has earlier been the target of some fanatic fans of his own country.
Who is Linton Das?
Liton Das was born in 1994 in a Bengali Hindu family in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. He started his international career in Test cricket against India in 2015 and made his ODI debut just eight days later. In the same year, he entered the shorter format by playing T20 International match against South Africa.
Initially Liton Das played as a specialist batsman, but after 2017 he was given the responsibility of regular wicketkeeper. After this Mushfiqur Rahim played only the role of batsman. Liton made a special mark in the team with his technique, timing and ability to score fast runs.
Why were you trolled in your own country?
Liton Das is a Hindu. Due to which his name became a cause of controversy during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in 2025. While playing for Dhaka Capitals, he was targeted by some spectators because of his religious beliefs. In a video viral on social media, it was seen that the audience was teasing him with words like ‘Bhuya’. Which is considered derogatory and means ‘fake’ or ‘trash’. However, Liton did not react and remained calm and continued his game.
Memorable innings and records
Liton Das’s most memorable innings came in the 2018 Asia Cup final, when he scored a brilliant century against India. Although Bangladesh lost the match, he was chosen ‘Man of the Match’ for his innings. In March 2020, he played a historic inning of 176 runs against Zimbabwe, which is still the highest individual score by any Bangladesh batsman in ODIs.
Till now Liton Das has scored 3,117 runs in Test cricket, 2,569 runs in ODI and 2,655 runs in T20 International. He has also captained Bangladesh in all three formats on different occasions, but for the first time in 2025, he was made the full-time captain of the T20 team.
Big responsibility in the World Cup
In the T20 World Cup 2026, there will be huge expectations from Liton Das not only in captaincy but also in batting. Along with Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanjid Hasan, he is considered the backbone of Bangladesh’s top order. Now it remains to be seen how far Liton Das can take his team on this big stage.
