He has already expressed his intention and said that Greenland is important for America’s security and it will have to be captured, but is Greenland really so important for America’s security? Is it just that America will have to capture the world’s largest island, Greenland, to protect itself from China and Russia, or is the real reason because of the precious thing buried in the ice-covered Greenland land, without capturing which Trump’s dream of Make America Great Again will not be fulfilled.
If we look at Greenland on the world map, it is the world’s largest island surrounded by sea on all sides, which is located between the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean. Geographically it is part of the North American continent, but politically and culturally it is very close to Europe, because it is the gateway to Europe. 80 percent of it is completely covered with snow. The population on the remaining 20 percent land is only about 56 thousand, but the more important information is that Greenland is a part of Denmark and as far as Greenland’s border in the Arctic is concerned, the area is very close to Russia.
America’s move to reach out to Russia
Due to the geographical location of Greenland, this island is very strategically important for America. Therefore, even without occupation, America has maintained the Pitufik Space Base in Greenland, which is the center of a radar system that gives early warning of any missile coming from Russia. At the same time, this space base also acts as a natural aircraft carrier to keep an eye on the increasing activities of Russia and China in the Arctic region. America also needs Greenland to prevent Russian Navy ships and submarines from entering the Atlantic Ocean through the GIUK Gap, the sea corridor between the rest of the island and Britain. Donald Trump always talks about occupying Greenland citing these strategic reasons.
Many valuable things are buried in the ground of Greenland
However, apart from this game, there is another big game, which Trump does not tell openly and that is Neodymium and Dysprosium. Both of these are very rare minerals. These are considered the new gold or industrial vitamins. First of all let us tell you about Neodymium. The world’s most powerful permanent magnet is made from Neodymium, which is used in the motor of any electric vehicle so that it can provide more power in less weight. Speakers, vibration motors in mobile phones and small hard disks with large storage capacity are made from this neodymium. Neodymium is essential for everything from wind energy to medical surgery and military guidance systems. Dysprosium is used in combination with neodymium.
Neodymium makes a magnet, but dysprosium is required to maintain its magnetism even after increasing the temperature. In such a situation, a car motor cannot be made without dysprosium. Dysprosium is used in everything from making nuclear reactors to making high intensity lamps and China has a monopoly on both these minerals. China alone has 80 to 90 percent of the dysprosium and neodymium supplied in the world. China keeps stopping its supply from time to time, due to which sometimes mobile phones are not available, sometimes vehicles are not available and sometimes the production of missile guidance system comes to a halt. All this works well only as long as China wants it.
US’s dependence on China will end by occupying Greenland
Greenland is also estimated to have reserves of both these minerals i.e. dysprosium and neodymium. America’s real intention is to capture this reserve so that it can stop China’s arbitrariness in the production of dysprosium and neodymium and establish its dominance in the world. There are other reasons for occupying Greenland. The biggest reason is the future maritime trade route. Right now the Arctic ice is melting, opening up new shipping routes. If these routes are completely built, the distance between Asia and Europe will be significantly reduced compared to the Panama and Suez Canal. If America has control over Greenland, then in future these routes will also be dominated by America.
This is the reason why when Trump was campaigning hard to become President for the second time, he had said that after becoming President, he would buy Greenland. Trump claims that Greenland has to depend on Denmark to run its economy. Every year Denmark gives about 600 million dollars to Greenland, with which Greenland meets its expenses. Because of this, Denmark is burdened and America can easily bear this burden, but Denmark has said that Greenland is not for sale, so Trump is now planning to capture it through military action.
NATO is in danger of breaking up
However, this is not so easy, because Greenland is a part of Denmark and Denmark is a member of the same NATO in which America is also. Trump has also turned his attention towards NATO countries and has clearly said that NATO countries will have to take their own responsibilities and they will have to spend 5 percent of their GDP on their respective armies so that the pressure on America is reduced. This means that NATO, which was once dominated by America and America also openly helped NATO countries, is now a burden for America.
If America takes military action on Greenland to lighten this burden, then according to Article 5 of NATO, this military action will be considered on the entire NATO group. Although when this article of NATO was decided, its purpose was to stop Russia from attacking NATO countries, but now when America is bent upon attacking, then NATO will definitely end, the United Nations will also end. Anyway, after the action on Venezuela, questions are being raised on the United Nations whether there really is a United Nations or whether it exists only on paper.
Whole Europe united against American threat
Right now the whole of Europe is united against the American threat. Seven countries of Europe have openly declared that there will be no agreement regarding Greenland. This includes a joint statement by French President Macron, Germany’s Chancellor Merz, Italy’s Prime Minister Meloni, Poland’s Prime Minister Tusk, Spain’s Prime Minister Sanchez, Britain’s Prime Minister Stormer and Denmark’s Prime Minister Fredersken, in which they said that to decide the future of Greenland, the will of the people there and international laws will be taken into consideration and American arbitrariness will not be tolerated.
Due to what America has done in Venezuela by ignoring the views of all the countries of the world, there is a fear that Trump will definitely fulfill his plan by ignoring the views of Europe also. If Trump does this, then whether it is Russia or China, he will also start a race to capture those countries where he already has his eyes on. Just as Russia has its eyes on Ukraine, China looks for an excuse to occupy Taiwan. American occupation of Greenland will also give an opportunity to these two superpowers to occupy other countries in their own way and then the world will get embroiled in an endless war, which no one would ever want at any cost.
