We wake up every morning, brush our teeth, take bath and start our work. Generally we feel that we are completely safe inside the house, especially in a place like the bathroom. But sometimes life presents such incidents which become difficult to believe.

Something similar happened with 40 year old Rahul Kumar Jangde, living in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. An ordinary morning, a simple task of brushing teeth and suddenly a pain that shook both his life and the medical understanding of the doctors. So let us know what kind of accident can happen while brushing, of which there are only 10 such cases in the world.

What kind of accident can happen while brushing?

Rahul tells that on the morning of December 1, he was brushing his teeth in the bathroom as usual when suddenly he felt like hiccups. After a few seconds, he felt that something was swelling rapidly from inside the right side of his throat. Within no time his neck started swelling. The pain was so severe that darkness started appearing before his eyes. Somehow he told his wife, something is not feeling right, we should go to the hospital. After this Rahul does not remember anything. When he regained consciousness, he was in the emergency ward of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital, Raipur.
Only 10 such cases worldwide

After examination in the hospital, even the doctors were surprised. Rahul neither had any injury, nor any accident, nor did he have cancer or any serious disease. Despite this, a very important vein in his neck had burst on its own. This vein is the carotid artery which delivers oxygenated blood directly from the heart to the brain. If there is even a little damage to this vein, a person can die within a few minutes. Doctors called it spontaneous carotid artery rupture i.e. rupture of the jugular vein without any reason.

Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, head of the Department of Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery, says that usually the carotid artery bursts due to accident, bullet injury, knife attack or throat cancer. But it is very dangerous if it bursts on its own without any reason. He told that according to medical journals, only 10 such cases have been registered so far in the whole world. This was the first case of its kind in Chhattisgarh.

the throat was filled with blood

Due to bursting of Rahul’s right carotid artery, blood started filling rapidly inside his throat. Blood accumulated around the vein and formed a balloon-like structure, which is called pseudo aneurysm in the language of doctors. This situation is very dangerous. If the blood clot formed there had reached the brain, Rahul could have been paralyzed or even died. According to the doctors, there was a danger every moment before and during the surgery that the vein might burst again.

Had this happened, Rahul could have died within a few minutes due to excessive bleeding. After surgery, Rahul was kept on ventilator for 12 hours. After regaining consciousness, doctors examined his voice, movements of his arms and legs and facial muscles to ensure that there was no damage to his brain.
