US President Donald Trump wants to capture Greenland at any cost. He said that America will acquire Greenland, whether European countries want it or not. Trump further said that if America does not do this, then Russia or China can increase their influence there and we will not allow Russia or China to become our neighbour. Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni’s reaction to Trump’s new policy regarding Greenland has come to light.
Maloney said he did not believe the US would resort to military force to regain control of Greenland and urged a stronger NATO role in the Arctic region to address US security concerns.
Military action in Greenland is in no one’s interest: Meloni
According to the AP, Maloney said that the use of military action in Greenland would not be in anyone’s interests and would have serious consequences for NATO. He said, ‘I am still not convinced that the United States will initiate military action to gain control over Greenland. He stressed that Italy would not support such a move.
The White House said on Tuesday the US administration was considering “options” that could include military action to regain control of the strategically important and mineral-rich island, which is a part of NATO ally Denmark.
What did Georgia Meloni say on Trump’s threat to occupy Greenland?
“I think the Trump administration, in its somewhat aggressive ways, is primarily focusing on the strategic importance of Greenland and the Arctic region for its own security,” Maloney said. This is an area where many foreign powers are active and I believe the message from America is that it will not accept any action by foreign powers.
Meloni is among the leaders close to the US President
The Italian Prime Minister stressed that a stronger NATO presence in the region would help address US concerns about adversary forces gaining influence in the region. Meloni is considered one of President Donald Trump’s closest allies in Europe, trying to act as a mediator between the often conflicting interests of the US and the EU.
Trump had made a plan in his first term
Trump has had the idea of buying Greenland from Denmark since his first term, but after the US military action in Venezuela, he has again raised the demand for US occupation of Greenland citing strategic reasons.
Britain and France came out against Trump
The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain have joined with Denmark to defend Greenland’s sovereignty. Denmark’s rights over Greenland were recognized by America in the 20th century.
