The ongoing anti-government protests in Iran have entered their third week. The US-based Human Rights Activist News Agency reported that more than 500 people have died during these demonstrations, while more than 10,600 people have been arrested across Iran. Amidst all this, US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of facing serious consequences.
Donald Trump said that Iran has crossed the red line set by him regarding the killing of protesters. People are being killed who should not be killed. These leaders rule through violence and we are considering this very seriously. The US President said that the army is looking at stronger options and will take a decision soon.
What are the options for action against Iran?
Trump will be given a briefing by the US military leadership on Tuesday (January 13) regarding action against Iran. In this, options like military attacks, use of cyber weapons, additional sanctions and promoting anti-government protests will be discussed. Iran has warned that in case of any American attack it will target American targets. Israel is also on high alert regarding possible action.
‘Protesters can be considered enemies of God’
Iran is taking strict action against the protesters. Senior officers of the Iranian Army have said that they will take a tough stance against the protesters. Senior security official Ali Larijani accused some protesters of adopting tactics similar to Islamic State militants and claimed murders and arson attacks. On the other hand, Iran’s Attorney General Mohammad Movahedi Azad has warned that the arrested protesters can be accused of being enemies of God, for which there is a provision of death penalty.
