During the Magh Mela held on the sacred sands of Sangam on Mauni Amavasya, a huge crowd of devotees gathered at the Sangam Nose, the administration had to face difficulties in controlling the situation. Meanwhile, the administration stopped Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati from moving forward. During this, there was a scuffle and a minor clash between the police and the supporters. Now SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav has attacked BJP on this issue.
On the incident of Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati being stopped and his supporters being pushed on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya during the Magh Mela, Akhilesh Yadav said, “The news of unpleasant behavior with sages, saints, devotees and devotees is sad. The BJP government should become ‘civilized’ before claiming ‘divine-grand’.”
Policemen stopped midway while going to Sangam Ghat
According to media reports, Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda claimed on Sunday that during the Prayagraj Magh Mela on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, the state administration stopped him from going towards Sangam Nose. He alleged that policemen stopped him midway while going to Sangam Ghat. The situation became such that I and my followers were forced to return to our Akhara without taking the holy bath.
‘Policemen manhandled his disciples’
According to Shankaracharya, his palanquin was stopped midway as senior police officers allegedly pushed his disciples and also misbehaved with them. He claimed that considering the prevailing situation, they decided not to proceed further and returned.
Decision not to take bath on Mauni Amavasya
Swami Avimukteshwarananda also said that considering the circumstances, he would not take a holy bath on Mauni Amavasya. Expressing his displeasure over the way the state administration handled the situation, he said the behavior of the officials had forced him to step back.
Speaking to reporters, Swami Avimukteshwarananda said, “Now the situation is that we are being stopped from taking the holy dip. Let’s see what happens next. The administration can do whatever it wants. We have asked our people to return because the administration is stopping the process. There is no reason for us to go ahead. We are supporting the administration.” He further said, “We have no problem, but now it is up to the administration to tell us what is wrong.”
The special thing is that Mauni Amavasya is the third and biggest bathing day of the ongoing Magh Mela in Prayagraj and according to tradition, there is a huge crowd of sages, saints and devotees in it. Despite dense fog and cold weather since Sunday morning, a large number of pilgrims reached Sangam Ghat to take the holy bath.
Tight security and traffic arrangements were made at Sangam Ghat to ensure safety and smooth movement of pilgrims. NDRF and SDRF teams were deployed, while CCTV cameras and drones were used for constant surveillance.
