Reservation for the post of Mayor will be decided through lottery

Let us tell you that the Maharashtra government has started the process of electing the mayors of Mumbai and 28 other municipal bodies, and the decision on which category the post of mayor will go to will be taken through lottery on January 22. The Urban Development Department has issued an order saying that this work will be done through lottery in the State Secretariat (Ministry).

Mayors in Maharashtra are elected by the councilors and the post is subject to reservation on the basis of rotation. Through lottery it is determined for which category the post of Mayor will be reserved, such as General, Women, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and OBC category.

After the category is declared, eligible candidates file their nominations. After this, elections are held in a special meeting of the elected councilors of the municipal bodies. The candidate who secures more than half the votes of the total number of members of the House is elected Mayor.

In case no single party gets a clear majority, alliances play a decisive role. In Mumbai, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the largest party in the elections held on January 15.

The BJP has won 89 out of the total 227 seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and wrested control of the country’s richest municipal body from the Thackeray family after nearly 30 years. BJP’s ally Shiv Sena, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has secured 29 seats. Elections were recently held in 29 municipal bodies of the state.
