A serious case regarding religious identity in a primary school in London has raised questions about religious freedom and inclusivity in Britain. It is alleged that an 8-year-old Hindu student was continuously harassed because of his religious symbol ‘Tilak’, due to which he finally had to leave the school. There is deep resentment in the British Hindu and Indian community over this incident.
Student targeted for applying tilak
The case pertains to Vickers Green Primary School, where this student went to school with the Hindu religious symbol Tilak applied on his forehead. It is alleged that he was repeatedly questioned about this religious symbol in the school and he was treated in an objectionable manner. Due to this the child started becoming mentally disturbed.
Fear increased due to the behavior of the headmaster
According to NDTV report, the situation became more serious when the school headmaster started closely monitoring the child during recess. The child described this behavior as frightening. Apart from this, it is alleged that due to his religious beliefs he was also denied responsible positions in the school.
Parents’ complaint, school’s response disputed
The student’s parents, along with other Hindu parents, spoke to the school administration and tried to explain the religious significance of Hindu rituals. However, the school rejected these objections. The school administration’s argument was that Tilak is not mandatory in Hindu religion, hence it cannot be allowed, whereas Muslim students are allowed to wear hijab.
Accused of violating the Equality Act
Social organization INSIGHT UK has termed this matter as religious discrimination. The organization says that this incident is a violation of Britain’s Equality Act 2010, which prohibits discrimination against any person on the basis of religion.
The matter reached the education authority
INSIGHT UK has also raised this issue with the local education authority. The organization says that no child should be made to feel isolated or uncomfortable because of his religion. According to the organization, at least four Hindu children have been removed from the school due to this alleged discrimination.
