There is disappointment in Pakistan over the decision of the International Cricket Council (ICC), in which it has been decided to hold the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup matches of Bangladesh in India as per the schedule. Sources say that Pakistan is definitely supporting Bangladesh on this issue, but withdrawing from the tournament is not being considered in any way.
According to media reports, Bangladesh had demanded to shift its T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka citing security reasons, but the ICC rejected this request. After this decision, some former players of Pakistan and people associated with cricket expressed their displeasure.
According to the report of Telecom Asia Sport, Pakistani sources said, “Pakistan supported Bangladesh in principle, because on India’s insistence, Pakistan’s matches were shifted from Pakistan to Dubai, but when Bangladesh put forward its point on the same basis, it was not accepted, which is disappointing.”
Sources also made it clear that Pakistan is definitely considering different options on this issue, but withdrawing from the tournament has never been an option.
Sources said, “Pakistan officials understand that they have no solid reason to boycott the event, as they are already playing at a neutral venue where they do not have any security concerns.”
The report also said that Pakistan never officially threatened to withdraw from the tournament. Most of the news circulating on social media was based on rumours.
Meanwhile, former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal also reacted to the decision. He said that this decision of ICC was expected.
Akmal told Telecom Asia, “Most of the ICC decisions are in favor of India. Member countries should be treated equally.”
Citing the example of the Champions Trophy, he said India’s wish was accepted because it generates huge revenue for the ICC. According to Akmal, India had played an important role in organizing the 2023 Asia Cup on the hybrid model.
However, Akmal also admitted that the ICC’s decision in this case too was difficult. The schedule had already been decided and it was not easy to change it at this time.
The Men’s T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from 7 February to 8 March.
