Bank Unions Strike: There is a possibility of impact on the banking system across the country on January 27, 2026. About eight lakh bank employees and officers are going to go on a one-day nationwide strike. Bank employees are carrying out this agitation demanding a five-day working week. Government, private, foreign, rural and cooperative banks will all participate in this movement.

The reason behind the strike of bank employees is the demand for 5 working days in a week. Talks about which have been going on for a long time. This proposal from the Indian Banks Association has been pending with the government for the last two years, but till now no final decision has been taken on it.
According to the unions, this demand was part of the agreement reached between the United Forum of Bank Unions and the Indian Banks Association on December 7, 2023. Which was later repeated in the settlement and joint note of 8 March 2024.
Under this proposal, it has been said to increase the daily working time by 40 minutes from Monday to Friday and declare all Saturdays as holiday. Due to this demand not being met, bank unions have decided to go on strike across the country on 27 January.

This strike across the country is being organized under the leadership of United Forum of Bank Unions. Which is a joint platform of nine major organizations of bank employees and officers. This includes All India Bank Officers Confederation, All India Bank Employees Association, National Confederation of Bank Employees, All India Bank Officers Association, Bank Employees Federation of India, Indian National Bank Employees Federation, Indian National Bank Officers Congress, National Organization of Bank Workers and National Organization of Bank Officers.
Banks may remain closed for 4 consecutive days
In the last week of January, customers may face problems in bank related work. Banks are likely to remain closed for four consecutive days. Banks are going to remain closed on 24th January as it is the fourth Saturday. At the same time, there will be a weekly holiday on Sunday, 25th January.
Banking services may be affected due to Republic Day on 26 January and strike of bank employees on 27 January. In such a situation, people are being advised to make their bank plans in advance.
