The Supreme Court has organized a fierce class of a lawyer on Friday (January 23, 2026). A notice of contempt was issued against the lawyer for having a heated argument with the judge of the Jharkhand High Court, with which he reached the Supreme Court.
According to the report of NDTV, Advocate Mahesh Tiwari had a heated argument with Jharkhand High Court judge Justice Rajesh Kumar during the hearing of a case on October 16 last year, in which he told the judge not to try to suppress the lawyers, to stay within his limits. Regarding this, Jharkhand High Court issued a contempt notice against him.
CJI Surya Kant gave a tough class to the lawyer
On Mahesh Tiwari’s petition, Chief Justice Surya Kant reprimanded him and said, ‘He just wants to show what he has done to me by taking an order from the Supreme Court against the contempt action.’ The court said, ‘If they want to apologise, then they should apologise… If they want to show their eyes to the judges then they can do so, but we are also sitting here and then we will also see.’ However, the Supreme Court has asked the High Court to adopt a sympathetic attitude if the lawyers apologize to them.
This case occurred on October 16 last year, when the advocate was fighting his client’s case in the Jharkhand High Court. Due to due electricity bill of Rs 1.30 lakh, electricity to his client’s house was disconnected.
Advocate Mahesh Tiwari opposed this and said in the court that his client is ready to deposit Rs 25,000 so that his connection can be connected. However, Justice Rajesh Kumar said that his client will have to deposit 50 percent of the bill, only then he will get the connection back. After this Mahesh Tiwari agreed that his client would deposit Rs 50 thousand. When the entire matter was settled, Advocate Mahesh Tiwari had a heated argument with Justice Rajesh Kumar.
Why was advocate Mahesh Tiwari angry at the High Court judge?
When Justice Rajesh Kumar started hearing the second case, he commented on the way Advocate Mahesh Tiwari presented the arguments. The lawyer got angry at this and said that he will give the arguments in his own way and not in the way the judge tells him. During this time, the Chairman of Jharkhand Bar Council was also present there and the court asked him to take cognizance of the conduct of the lawyer.

Then advocate Mahesh Tiwari stood up from his seat and told the judge, ‘I can argue in my own way, not the way you tell me. Keep this in mind… do not try to pressure the lawyer. I am telling. The judge also told him, ‘You cannot say that the court has done injustice.’ The lawyer asked the judge whether he had said this, you watch the video recording. He said that it was some other judge who had said this.
The lawyer said, ‘You watch the recording. I just requested you… the country is on fire because of the judiciary. These are my words. Do not try to pressure any lawyer. You are a judge so you know a lot and we are lawyers? I will argue in my own way, don’t forget your limits. I have also practiced for 40 years. After the matter gained momentum, a five-judge bench of Jharkhand High Court headed by Chief Justice Tarlok Singh issued a contempt notice against the lawyer.
