Can DJ Laser Lights Cause Permanent Vision Loss: The laser light running in a DJ party, club or any event may look attractive, but it can also be dangerous for the eyes. A recent case has shown the need to understand this threat seriously. Let us tell you how dangerous it is for you.
What do experts say?
Eye doctor Dr Ashish Markan shared the case of a teenage boy who suddenly lost vision in his right eye. Investigation revealed that his vision had fallen to 6/18. When the eyes were examined internally, injury marks were found in the middle part of the eye (macula). During the conversation, the boy told that he had seen directly the laser light being used by the DJ several times. During the party, laser beam was repeatedly hit in his eyes.
Laser damage to eyes
According to doctors, this condition is called eye damage caused by laser. The strong light of the laser damages that part of the eye, which is most important for clear and straight vision. If the laser light shines directly into the eyes for even a few seconds, or repeatedly, vision may become blurry, things may appear distorted, and reading may become difficult. In some cases this damage may last forever.
When does the danger increase?
Dr. explains that it is not common for laser to cause eye damage in a club or party, but if the laser is too strong or is not being used properly, then the risk increases. If a particularly strong green laser falls directly on the eyes for a few seconds, it can damage the retina. Doctors say that repeatedly exposing the laser light to the eyes is more dangerous. The eye focuses the laser light on a small point, due to which its effect becomes more intense. This danger increases further in a dark environment like a club, because the pupils of the eyes remain more open there.
When should one go to the doctor?
If after seeing the laser there is a burning sensation in the eyes, blurred vision, dark spots, piercing light or headache, then it should not be ignored. Such symptoms may occur immediately or even after a few hours. Doctors advise that in such a situation one should consult an eye doctor on the same day. If treatment is done on time, vision can be saved, but complete recovery is not possible every time. Therefore, it is most important to be careful not to look directly at the laser light, if the beam comes towards the eyes, look away and maintain a safe distance.
