Many big political leaders and famous personalities have lost their lives in plane and helicopter accidents that happen from time to time in India. The latest case is of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. These incidents not only shook the country but also raised questions on the security system. Let us take a look at such big accidents, in chronological order, in which the country lost its important faces.

January 2026: Ajit Pawar
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar passed away at the age of 66. His chartered plane crashed while landing at Baramati airport at 8:45 am on Wednesday. A total of 5 people including Ajit Pawar died in this accident. Pawar was going to Baramati to campaign for Panchayat elections. According to Maharashtra Aviation Department, for the first time during landing, the runway was not clearly visible, after which the pilot lifted the plane again. At that time the visibility was said to be around 2000 meters.

June 2025: Vijay Rupani
The Air India plane crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. 241 people died in this accident, which included former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

March 2022: G. S. Balyogi
The then Lok Sabha Speaker and senior Telugu Desam Party leader G. S. Balayogi died in a helicopter accident in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.

December 2021: General Bipin Rawat
India’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu on 8 December 2021. Many other people including his wife also died in this accident.

April 2011: Dorji Khandu
Dorji Khandu, the then Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, died in a Pawan Hans helicopter crash in a remote area near the China border.

September 2009: Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y. popularly known as YSR. S. Rajasekhara Reddy lost his life in a helicopter crash in the Nallamala hills.

March 2005: OP Jindal
Industrialist and Haryana Energy Minister OP Jindal died in a helicopter crash in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Former Union Minister Surendra Singh was also killed in this accident.

September 2004: Cyprian Sangma
Meghalaya Rural Development Minister Cyprian Sangma and 9 others died in the Pawan Hans helicopter crash. This accident happened near Barpani Lake near Shillong.

April 2004: Soundarya
Famous actress of South Indian films K. S. Saumya, known as Soundarya, died in a plane crash on 17 April 2004.

September 2001: Madhavrao Scindia
Veteran Congress leader Madhavrao Scindia died in a chartered plane crash in Bhogaon in Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh. He was going to address a rally in Kanpur.

June 1980: Sanjay Gandhi
Sanjay Gandhi, son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, died in a plane crash in Delhi. He was considered the emerging face of politics at that time.
