EU’s big action on Iran amidst tension with America, how will Khamenei’s tension increase?

Amid tensions with America, the European Union (EU) has taken a big decision on Iran. The EU has decided to include Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the list of terrorist organizations along with Al-Qaeda, Islamic State and Hamas. European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas said that the IRGC has killed 6373 people during the protests. He said on Thursday, ‘If you act like a terrorist, you should be treated like a terrorist.’

Support of 27 member countries is necessary

Kaja Kallas said that this step against Iran will require the support of 27 member countries of the European Union, after which IRGC will be included in the list of terrorist organization. Earlier France was opposing it because it feared that it could pose a threat to the French citizens trapped in Iran and the avenues of dialogue with Iran could be closed. But now France has changed its stance.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said that it is necessary to respond to the unbearable repression on peaceful protests in Iran. There can be no apology for crimes. The French Presidential Office also confirmed its support. Countries like Italy, Spain and Germany were already in favor of it.

How important is IRGC for Iran?

IRGC is the most powerful military branch of Iran. It was created by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 to protect the Islamic Revolution. It works separately from the regular army and reports directly to the Supreme Leader. IRGC plays a huge role in Iran’s politics, economy and foreign policy. America, Canada and Australia have already declared it a terrorist organization.

Iran is an ally of Russia and adopts anti-West policy, because of this the EU’s decision will increase pressure on Iran. IRGC members may be banned from entering EU countries and their assets may be frozen.
