Why the uproar in Pakistan over the hanging of Baloch lioness Mehrang? The echo is being heard even to Trump, know what is the case

Controversy has arisen at the international level after an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan sentenced Baloch human rights activist Mehrang Baloch to life imprisonment. Now human rights organizations, activists and political organizations from all over the world are coming out openly in support of Mehrang, who is considered a vocal voice of Baloch rights. The matter has become so big that efforts are being made to convey its echo to US President Donald Trump.

Who is Mehrang Baloch?
Mehrang Baloch has long been raising her voice against alleged enforced disappearances, custodial deaths and human rights violations in Balochistan. She is counted among the prominent leaders of Baloch Yakjahti Committee (BYC) and is quite popular in the Baloch community for campaigning for the families of missing people.

What is the matter of arrest and punishment?
Mehrang was arrested during a protest organized in Quetta in March 2025. The demonstration was organized against alleged enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. Later, Pakistan’s anti-terrorism court sentenced him and three other activists to life imprisonment in a case related to the murder of a Frontier Corps officer.

Why did Greta Thunberg raise her voice?
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has released a video message demanding Mahrang’s release. Greta says that peaceful dissent is being treated as a crime and Mehrang has been targeted because of his political and human rights work. Greta alleged that Mehrang was kept in detention for a long time, where he faced isolation and health problems. He also claimed that the trial was conducted behind closed doors inside a high-security prison, raising questions about transparency and fair judicial process.

The International Human Rights Foundation has also strongly criticized the decision. The organization alleges that the trial was not fair and transparent and the accused were not given adequate legal rights. IHRF has called on the UN Human Rights Council and the international community to conduct an independent investigation and put pressure on Pakistan to ensure a fair judicial process.

How did the matter reach Trump?
Baloch American Congress President Tara Chand has written a letter to US President Donald Trump expressing concern over the life imprisonment given to Mehrang Baloch. The letter said Mehrang has dedicated his life to peacefully raising the issue of human rights violations and enforced disappearances in Balochistan. The organization alleges that the verdict against him raises serious questions regarding the rights of freedom of expression, judicial process and peaceful political activities.

Increasing international pressure on Pakistan
The international debate on Pakistan’s judicial process and human rights record has intensified regarding the sentencing of Mehrang Baloch. While Pakistan claims that the court has given its verdict on the basis of available evidence, human rights organizations and Baloch groups are calling it an action to suppress political voices. For this reason, the case of Mehrang Baloch is no longer just an internal issue of Pakistan, but has become a part of the international human rights debate.
