Vaishno Devi Medical College opening in Katra, Jammu was a golden dream for the students, but this dream could not last long. After the cancellation of MBBS course of the college, 50 students studying there suddenly got confused. Now the situation has calmed down and all these students have made a new beginning in different medical colleges of Jammu and Kashmir.

what is the reason for the dispute

Vaishno Devi Medical College got permission to fill MBBS seats in September last year. Admission was given to 50 students on the basis of NEET, but after the list came out, protests started in Jammu. The reason was that most of the selected students were non-Hindus and the college was said to be linked to the donation money of Vaishno Devi Temple. Amidst the ongoing protests, the National Medical Commission withdrew the permission for MBBS course for the session 2025-26, citing shortcomings in the infrastructure of the college. After this, the first batch of the college remained incomplete, but to save the studies of the students, they were shifted to other colleges.

A WhatsApp group, which remained a memory

The students of the first batch of Vaishno Devi Medical College had formed a WhatsApp group in the initial days of admission. At that time, there were talks of happiness, congratulations and dreams for the future in the group. But as the controversy over the college increased, the same group became a source of worry and fear. Now the college is no more, but the same WhatsApp group remains the last identity of that batch.

Adjustments made in 7 medical colleges

After counselling, Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examination has distributed all 50 students among seven government medical colleges. Of these, 22 students have been given places in the medical colleges of Kashmir and 28 students have been given places in the colleges of Jammu division.

How many students went to which colleges?

In Kashmir, students have been sent to GMCs of Anantnag, Baramulla and Handwara. 8 students have got admission in Anantnag GMC, while 7 students each have been given place in other colleges. Students have been adjusted in GMC of Udhampur, Kathua, Rajouri and Doda in Jammu region.

Safety and convenience were also taken care of

All Kashmiri students have been sent to colleges either in Kashmir itself or in areas where the Muslim population is in good numbers. With this, the concerns of the students and their families have been addressed to a great extent.

Classes start, but worried about studies

As soon as the winter vacation is over, students have joined classes in the medical colleges of Kashmir. However, there is definitely a concern in the minds of the students that how will they compensate for the time they have missed in studies. Many students are especially worried about a difficult subject like Anatomy.

what the students said

Mutahir Ayub, a resident of Anantnag, who got GMC Rajouri, says that he was very upset while returning from Katra. He said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the National Medical Commission had assured that the students would be adjusted in Jammu and Kashmir only. College teachers have also assured to provide additional classes.
