Before the presentation of Budget 2026 in Parliament, small farmers of Punjab have directly demanded relief from the BJP government at the Centre. Farmers living in rural areas of Punjab said that they are burdened with debt and their condition at the ground level is very bad. Before the budget, farmers raised the demand that the policies should not be limited to papers only, but should be actually implemented in the villages.
What are their main demands?
Farmers of Punjab say that the subsidy and welfare schemes made by the government often get stuck on the way. Farmers clarified that farmers with small land holdings are most affected and they need immediate support.
Their demand is that the direct benefits of subsidy should reach the ground level, there should be effective implementation of every scheme of the government. It should not happen that the schemes remain on paper and the farmers remain hungry. Farmers said that at present the condition of poor farmers in Punjab is very bad and there should be a provision for special relief for them in the budget.
Demands for education, health and villages
Giving the example of Ayushman Bharat scheme, farmers said that just as health cover up to Rs 5 lakh was given, similarly concrete schemes should be brought for education and agriculture sector also. Their focus should be especially on small farmers and small traders.
There are demands related to rural development that there should be mandatory repair of village roads every 5 years. Villages should also have basic facilities like cities. Under the special package, villages should be uplifted economically and socially. According to ANI, the farmers reiterated that the government’s work should not be limited to announcements only, but should be visible at the ground level.
Another farmer Gurvinder Singh said that the budget is presented every year, but its real benefits neither reach the farmers nor the poor class. He alleged that most of the benefits of the budget remain limited to the rich. Gurvinder Singh demanded that after the budget, the loans of poor farmers should be waived off and fair prices for their crops should be ensured. He also said that the Minimum Support Price has been fixed very low and a special package should be given every year for Punjab.
