Why are government employees protesting against Yunus?
A massive demonstration is taking place near Jamuna, the official residence of Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, demanding immediate implementation of the ninth national pay scale. To remove the protesters, security forces set up barricades and used water cannon and sound grenades. The protesters raised slogans in support of their demands.
15 people injured in clash with police
The protesters broke the police barricade and moved towards the residence of Mohammad Yunus at around 11:30 am on Friday and started protesting. After this the police used lathicharge and tear gas. According to the report of Somoy News, at least 15 people have been injured during the clash with security personnel.
According to Dhaka Tribune, Police Commissioner Masood Alam said, ‘We are alert so that the law and order situation does not deteriorate. We are talking to the protesters so that they go somewhere else and protest. All the protesters gathered near Shaheed Minar in Dhaka and then started moving towards the residence of Mohammad Yunus, raising slogans against him. Tear gas shells were also fired to disperse the crowd.
Yunus is dividing Bangladesh before elections
General elections are going to be held in Bangladesh on 12 February. The protesters fear that after the new government assumes power, the process of proposed salary increase for government employees may be delayed. Their demand is that the current interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus should announce the new pay scale, as the Pay Commission has already released its full report and this pay scale can be implemented through gadget notification.
