Keyboard: We use the keyboard on mobile or computer every day, but rarely does this question come to our mind as to why the letters on the keyboard are not in a straight line like ABCDE. In school, we were taught the alphabet like this, then why does everything appear upside down on the keyboard? The story behind this is quite interesting and surprising.
The story started with a typewriter
The design of the keyboard did not happen suddenly. Its roots go back to about 150 years old typewriter. In early typewriters, if the letters ABCDE were a straight line, then while typing, when adjacent buttons were pressed, the metal rods would collide with each other. Due to this the machine would get jammed again and again and the work would slow down.
Why was QWERTY layout created?
To solve this problem, engineers spread the letters in such a way that the most frequently used buttons remain far away from each other. From this experiment, the QWERTY layout was born which is still used in almost every keyboard. Its purpose was not to make typing faster but to save the typewriter from jamming.
Technology changed, why not the layout?
Today’s digital keyboards have neither metal rods nor the fear of jamming, yet we still use the same old layout. The reason is habit and training. Crores of people have learned to type on this layout. If suddenly a keyboard with straight lines containing ABCDE comes, most people will not be able to type.
Would the ABCDE layout have been easier?
The ABCDE straight line keyboard sounds simple, but it can actually make finger movements more tiring. The QWERTY layout takes care of the natural position of the fingers, making it easy to type for long periods of time.
Why does this mystery persist even today?
The real secret is that keyboard design is based more on history and habit than convenience. Even though technology has changed, human habits do not change so easily. This is the reason why the straight line of ABCDE is still visible only in books and not on the keyboard.
