US President Donald Trump has once again reiterated that the US elections are affected by theft and rigging. To restore public trust, Trump has demanded major changes in the rules. The US President has warned that if the system is not reformed in time, the risk of political collapse in the United States will increase.
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, he wrote, “America’s elections are rigged, stolen, and the laughing stock of the entire world. Either we fix them, or we have no country left.”
Trump’s post on social media
Trump wrote in a post on the social media platform Truth, “America’s elections are rigged, stolen, and the laughingstock of the entire world. Either we fix them, or we have no country left.” He has appealed to Republican MPs and supporters to support these proposed changes.
Donald Trump has made such claims several times after his defeat in the 2020 US elections. However, the court has not found any evidence of fraud in the elections. Trump has repeatedly reiterated that American elections are affected by theft and rigging, that is why he has reiterated the demand for major changes in the rules to maintain public trust. The US President believes that doing this will prevent election fraud.
What is Trump’s demand?
Trump’s demand is that it should be made mandatory for all voters who are voting to show their photo identity card issued by the government before voting. Trump demanded to make it mandatory to provide proof of American citizenship at the time of voter registration. Apart from this, he also raised questions regarding postal voting. According to Trump, most postal voting should be abolished and he said that it should be allowed only in cases like illness, disability, military service or travel.
This statement of Trump has come after his recent interview. During an interview with news channel NBC, Trump said, “We need elections in which people cannot rig… I will get it done, and by the way, there is a good response in opinion polls in favor of it even among the Democrats.”
There is a contradiction in Trump’s statement. People believe that this could jeopardize the independence of state and county election authorities from federal control over local elections. Under the US Constitution, states are responsible for conducting elections, although Congress can set some parameters. At the same time, voter ID is already mandatory in many US states, although there is considerable variation in the types of acceptable ID cards.
