Just before the start of ICC T20 World Cup 2026, BCCI has taken a tough stance towards the players of Team India. The board has clearly said that players will not be allowed to take their families with them during the tournament. This decision of the board has come at a time when players are preparing for a long and stressful tournament.
Why did the players raise the demand
According to the report of The Indian Express, some players and support staff of Team India believed that the presence of family in a long and stressful tournament like the World Cup gives mental strength to the players. With this in mind, the team management had appealed to the BCCI to allow players to travel with their wives or partners, but the board has refused to accept this suggestion.
What does BCCI say?
BCCI, while justifying its decision, has said that in a big event like the World Cup, players should concentrate solely on cricket. The board believes that being with family can divert players’ attention. Therefore, the board has decided to keep the old rules in force.
However, BCCI has also made it clear that if a player wants to keep his family with him personally, he can do so, but the entire responsibility and expense for this will have to be borne by the player himself. The family will not be included in the team’s official travel plans.
What are the current rules
According to BCCI guidelines, if a foreign tour is for more than 45 days, players may be allowed to keep their families with them for a limited period of time. Whereas for tours of less than 45 days, this permission is granted for an even shorter period. The schedule of the T20 World Cup does not meet these conditions, so the board has refused to change the rules.
Rules were changed after the defeat of Australia tour
The roots of this strictness are related to India’s recent tour of Australia, where the team had to face a disappointing defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After that, BCCI had prepared new guidelines regarding the discipline and focus of the players, which are the same for the players as well as the coaches and support staff.
