USA-Israel Relations: No decisive agreement was reached on Iran after the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Wednesday. The two leaders held closed-door discussions for more than two hours. This was Trump’s seventh meeting with Netanyahu after returning to power.
Trump said- talks will continue
After the meeting, Trump wrote on social media that no concrete decision was taken in this meeting. He said, “All that has been decided is that I have said that talks should continue with Iran, so that it can be seen whether an agreement can be reached or not.”
Trump further said, “If an agreement is reached, that will be our first choice. If not, then what to do next will be seen later.” He also did not clarify whether Netanyahu agreed to this matter or not.
No major breakthrough on Iran
There were fears that Netanyahu would urge Trump to expand talks with Iran not just to the nuclear program but also to ballistic missiles and regional activities. Netanyahu stressed Israel’s security needs at the meeting, but there was no indication that Trump had accepted his demands. Israeli officials have already warned that the nuclear deal alone will not be able to control Iran’s vast military power. Trump has repeatedly said that if diplomacy does not work, military option can also be used. At the same time, Tehran has warned of retaliation for any attack, due to which the possibility of a major conflict in the Middle East has increased.
Trump’s comments on missiles and nuclear weapons
In an interview with Fox Business, Trump said he wanted a satisfactory deal with “no nuclear weapons and no missiles,” but gave no further details. Trump told Axios that he is considering sending a second aircraft carrier strike group to the region. At the same time, Iran has made it clear that they will not accept attempts to link nuclear talks with their missiles and regional allies.
Israel’s concerns
Israeli officials are concerned that the US may settle for a limited agreement that would fail to stop Iran’s support for groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. “The prime minister stressed Israel’s security needs in the context of the talks, and the two countries agreed to continue close coordination and contact,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.
Israel included in ‘Board of Peace’
Gaza was also discussed in the meeting, where Trump tried to push forward a ceasefire and reconstruction plan. But progress remained slow due to differences over Hamas giving up weapons and Israeli troops withdrawing.
Trump said, ‘We discussed the amazing progress happening in Gaza and the entire region. There is indeed peace in the Middle East. Netanyahu’s visit was quite peaceful, the media was not given any access to the Oval Office. Only a small photo was released in which the two leaders were seen shaking hands.
Netanyahu said that Israel will join Trump’s Board of Peace initiative. After meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, he wrote on social media, ‘I signed for Israel to join the Board of Peace.’
Trump’s social media post
Trump wrote on Truth Social, “I just met with Prime Minister Netanyahu and his team. The meeting was very good and the relationship between our two countries is as strong as ever. No concrete decision was taken in this meeting, it was only decided that talks with Iran should continue. Last time, Iran did not make an agreement and it got the blow of ‘Midnight Hammer’, which was not good for it. Hopefully this time they will show more understanding and responsibility. We have seen the progress taking place in Gaza and the entire region. Also talked about. There is peace in the Middle East, thank you for this.
