Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Thursday (June 18) that India and America are very close to finalizing the interim bilateral trade agreement. This was said a day after the conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump during the G7 Summit.
Vikram Misri said in a press conference on Thursday, “We have made a lot of progress towards completing the interim bilateral trade agreement with the US. We are very close to finalizing that agreement.” He also informed that US Trade Representative Jameson Greer will visit India next week to take the talks forward.
Misri said that the proposed trade deal was also discussed in the meeting between Modi and Trump and both the leaders have directed to complete it as soon as possible. This came to light when Trump said that both the countries are very close to finalizing the long-awaited trade deal. Speaking to reporters after the meeting with PM Modi, Trump described the Indian Prime Minister as one of the toughest negotiators and said that talks on this had been going on for some time.

Donald Trump said, “We had a very good conversation with Indian Prime Minister Modi. We are making trade deals, doing many things. A lot is happening between America and India.” Praising PM Modi for promoting Indian investment in America, Trump said, “The Prime Minister is building a lot in America. He is spending a lot of money in America.”
India-UK trade deal
Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday welcomed the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which will come into effect from July 15. He has described it as a historic milestone in the mutual relations between the two countries and a big step to promote trade and investment. In a post on Twitter, PM Modi said that this agreement will further strengthen economic relations between India and the United Kingdom and create new opportunities in important sectors.
