Barack Obama Expressed Concern: Former US President Barack Obama on Thursday expressed concern over Donald Trump’s decision in which Trump canceled the scientific judgment behind climate rules. Obama said this move would make ordinary Americans less safe and less healthy.
This scientific report made during Obama’s time stated that greenhouse gases are a threat to our health and life because they help in climate change. Obama wrote on social media platform
“Without it we wouldn’t be safe, our health would suffer and it would be harder to fight climate change, all just so oil and gas companies can make more money.”
Trump’s announcement and the officials present with it
Earlier, Trump announced this decision with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and White House Budget Director Russell Vought. Vought has long been in favor of rescinding this finding and is also the chief architect of the Conservative policy blueprint Project 2025.
Revocation of this finding would remove federal rules for measuring, reporting, certifying and complying with greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars. However, initially this rule will not apply to stationary sources like power plants.
Why did Trump cancel the endangerment finding?
Donald Trump’s administration on Thursday took the biggest step against climate change in America and canceled the scientific conclusion that greenhouse gas emissions are a threat to human health. The finding was the legal basis for federal climate regulations and would eliminate federal greenhouse gas emissions standards for all vehicles and engines. The moves come as the administration last year cut regulations and took other steps to ease fossil fuel development and slow the rollout of clean energy.
Trump said, “After the EPA has completed the entire process, we are formally ending the so-called Endangerment Finding. It was a reprehensible Obama-era policy that caused significant harm to the American auto industry and raised prices for American consumers. It is the largest deregulatory action ever taken in the United States.”
Origin and Importance of Endangerment Finding
The endangerment finding was first adopted in 2009. The EPA then took steps under the Clean Air Act of 1963 to reduce carbon dioxide, methane and four other heat-trapping air pollutants in cars, power plants and other industries.
This finding came after the Supreme Court’s decision in 2007 in Massachusetts vs. In the EPA case, it was decided that the EPA has the authority to control carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act.
