The atmosphere heated up in the Arts Faculty campus of Delhi University on Friday (February 13) evening when sloganeering started between the left and right wing student organizations. A protest was held by the Left organization in support of the implementation of UGC rules. Meanwhile, an incident of alleged scuffle and assault with a female journalist who had come there for coverage came to light.

Different claims from both sides

After the incident, a round of allegations and counter-allegations started. Left student organization says that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers misbehaved with the female journalist.

Whereas ABVP has completely rejected these allegations. ABVP says that when a female journalist asked questions to the protesting left students, some students did not like the question and they themselves assaulted the journalist.

ABVP’s Delhi Secretary Sarthak Sharma said that the question asked by the female journalist might have displeased some people. He alleged that the same people who talk about women’s safety on campus raised their hands with a woman journalist.

Sarthak Sharma also said that the female journalist has lodged a complaint in the police station and the video footage will make it clear who was involved in the incident. He claimed that ABVP was not involved anywhere in this entire matter and the organization condemns this incident.

Demand for cancellation of degree

ABVP has demanded that those who assaulted the female journalist should be identified and strict action should be taken against them. The organization even said that the degrees of the guilty students should also be cancelled.

At present the police is busy investigating the matter. There is an atmosphere of tension in the campus, but the administration says that the situation is under control. Now everyone’s eyes are on the investigation report, which will make it clear who was responsible behind the incident.
