US President Donald Trump has reacted sharply to the Supreme Court’s decision, in which his global tariff policy was canceled as unconstitutional. Trump, posting on the social media platform Truth Social, called it a ‘stab in the back of American workers’ and said that he will continue to fight against this decision. He has also announced imposition of 10 percent extra tariff.
Trump called the court’s decision shameful
Trump wrote in the post, ‘My tariff policy was making America great again, bringing back jobs. This 6-3 decision is a shameful thing. We will fight back and win. The Trump administration called the decision “shameful” and the White House issued a statement saying it would try to reimpose the tariffs through other laws.
Trump will impose 10% extra tariff
Announcing the new action, Trump has said that despite the Supreme Court’s decision, many of his tariffs will remain in place and he is immediately implementing a new 10% global tariff. The National Security Tariff (under Section 232), the existing Section 301 tariff and other security-related tariffs will remain in place with immediate effect. Also, he will sign an executive order today itself, under which a global tariff of 10% will be imposed through Section 122 of the Trade Act 1974. This tariff will be over the existing normal tariff.
Trump will use alternative measures
Donald Trump said alternative measures will be used on tariffs after the US Supreme Court struck down his global tariff policy, indicating that his administration will pursue other options to advance its trade agenda.
Trump claimed that he can impose measures like imposing a complete ban or stopping trade with a particular country. However, he also said that under the court’s decision, they ‘cannot impose any fine’. His statements indicate a possible escalation in trade policy and renewed tensions with global partners.
President’s powers limited: Supreme Court
This post came at a time when the Supreme Court overturned Trump’s tariff strategy by a 6-3 majority. The court said that Trump misused the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which allows to control some transactions in a national emergency, but not to impose such huge tariffs. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, stating that the President’s powers are limited.
