Big news for those traveling on National Highway, government is going to bring new rules for toll payment from April 1.

Toll Plaza: There is a big news for those traveling on the National Highway, about which it is very important to know. Actually, the government is preparing to completely eliminate cash transactions at the toll plazas of the National Highway from April 1, 2026. The government is thinking of digitalizing the process of collecting toll tax on the highway. In such a situation, it is possible that in the coming time, we may have to depend on digital modes like FASTag and UPI for payment at toll plazas.

The era of cash payment on toll is over!

According to the current rules, if your vehicle does not have a valid FASTag or the FASTag is not working, then double the regular toll is charged. At the same time, those who choose to pay through UPI have to pay 1.25 times the toll tax according to the category of their vehicle.

Talking about this, an official concerned said, “Payment through UPI was started in November as an option to reduce cash payment, which was then about 2 percent of the total toll collection. Till now, cash payment has declined by about 1 percent, which is half of the payment collected in cash a few months ago. There is a UPI system for making payment at all toll plazas.”

Quoting the TOI report, it has also been learned that the government is also working on resolving the issue of penalty for overloading, which is currently mostly paid in cash. A proposal is being considered to make cashless overloading penalty payment correct and easy.

These are the big reasons to end the cash system

Talking about this, NHAI said, “The objective of the proposed measure is to strengthen the benefits of electronic toll collection and to strengthen the efficiency and reliability of fee plaza operations.”

The purpose of this rule of the government is to relieve the users from jams and long queues on the highway. Many times cash payment takes more time because a lot of time is spent in money transactions, giving or taking change and cutting receipts. In such a situation, there is a long line of vehicles at the toll. With digital payment, vehicles will be able to pass through the highway without stopping. On one hand, this will make it easier for the users to travel on the highway and on the other hand, there will be uniform transparency in toll transactions. The possibility of toll evasion or any disturbance will also be completely eliminated.

Standing in queues not only wastes time but also wastes fuel. It was also revealed in a study that due to digital mode of payment at toll plazas, the country will save Rs 87000 crore annually. Many times you might have seen an altercation between the driver and the toll worker at the toll over change in change, this problem will also be completely eliminated with the digital system. The government wants to bring barrier-free tolling in the coming time. That means toll will be deducted at the speed at which the vehicle is moving. For this, it is very important to have cashless payment.
