Which courses to do after 12th?
To become a fashion designer, it is mandatory to pass 12th. After this, students can do degree course in design field. For admission into the major design institutes of the country, one has to give an entrance exam. Like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) conducts its entrance examination. Whereas for admission in National Institute of Design (NID), one has to appear for NID DAT exam. Whereas in private institutions this fee can reach Rs 3 to 6 lakh per year. The total expenditure for the entire four year course can range from Rs 5 to Rs 20 lakh. Many institutions also provide scholarships to meritorious students, which can reduce the financial burden.
How is the study pattern?
In fashion designing course, not only designing of clothes is taught, but also technical and commercial aspects of design are given attention. Students are taught subjects like fashion illustration, pattern making, garment construction, textiles, computer aided design, fashion history, trend analysis and portfolio development. Along with this, industry exposure and project work is also done.
How to start a career?
After completing the degree, most of the students start their career through internship. Job opportunities as a fashion designer can be found in garment companies, fashion brands, textile industry, e-commerce platforms and film industry. Many students also start their own fashion labels. Employment opportunities can also be found in big brands like Zara and H&M. The starting salary in fashion designing is between Rs 2.5 to 5 lakh per year. Depending on experience and skills, this salary can reach Rs 8 to 10 lakh or more. If a designer establishes his own brand or works with a big fashion house, then there is no limit to the income. Every year new trends come in the fashion industry, due to which there are always opportunities in this field.
