Latest figures of number of IAS officers and vacant posts have come out in Uttar Pradesh. That means many important posts are still vacant. In the coming times, the picture may change further due to retirement and new recruitment. Hundreds of posts are to be filled through direct recruitment and promotion from PCS, which is going to have a big impact on the administrative structure. How many officers are currently deployed?
The size of IAS cadre has been increased in Uttar Pradesh by the beginning of 2026. Earlier the number of sanctioned posts was 652, which has been increased to 683. According to the new structure, a total of 683 posts are authorized in the state. Of these, 571 IAS officers are currently deployed. This means that about 81 to 112 posts are still vacant or yet to be filled.
How many officers posted at which post?
There are total 370 senior duty posts in UP. Of these, 75 District Magistrates (DMs) are posted in 75 districts. Apart from this, important posts like 84 Special Secretaries are also included. The responsibility of administrative work in the state is in the hands of these officers. Around 31 to 32 IAS officers are likely to retire in the year 2026. Due to this the number of vacant posts may increase further.
Mathematics of recruitment and promotion
According to the revised cadre structure, a total of 476 posts in UP are to be filled through direct recruitment. Whereas 207 posts will be filled in IAS through promotion from Provincial Civil Service (PCS). By the beginning of 2026, 30 PCS officers have been promoted and included in the IAS cadre. Due to this, some vacant posts have been filled, but the total number is still less.
situation at national level
According to the report of Indian Express, the Central Government told in the Parliament that till January 1, 2025, there are a large number of total vacancies in IAS, IPS and IFS in the entire country. There are 6,877 sanctioned posts in IAS across the country, out of which 5,577 officers are posted. That means approximately 1,300 posts are vacant.
There are 4,594 officers working in IPS against 5,099 sanctioned posts. There are 2,164 officers posted in IFS out of 3,193 sanctioned posts. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced about 933 vacancies for the Civil Services Examination of 2026. The examination is to be held in May 2026.
Which states have more posts?
The highest sanctioned posts of IAS and IPS are in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and AGMUT cadre (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories). In case of IFS, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and AGMUT cadre have more authorized posts as compared to other states.
