Why Are Young People Getting Heart Attacks: Cardiologists in India are observing a worrying trend these days that the arteries of young people are aging prematurely. Although the birth certificate shows 35 years, but on examination the arteries look like 50-55 years. This difference is what doctors call “early vascular aging”, i.e. premature aging of the arteries. Let us tell you why this is happening.

Chronological vs Biological Age

Dr. Vivek Kumar told TOI that age is now seen from two perspectives. One is chronological age, i.e. how many years have you lived and the other is biological age, i.e. how healthy are the body parts. Sometimes a 35 year old person may look like a 50 year old inside, especially in the case of heart and arteries. Healthy arteries are flexible. They expand and contract with every heartbeat and maintain smooth blood flow. But when they start becoming hard and thick, damage starts accumulating at the microscopic level. This process can start without symptoms.

Why are young arteries aging?

According to Dr. Mukesh Goyal, modern lifestyle is the main reason for this. Sitting for long periods of time, high-status jobs, processed foods, lack of sleep, smoking, uncontrolled blood pressure and sugar, all these together cause rapid damage to the arteries. The ICMR-INDIAB study of the Indian Council of Medical Research has reported increasing cases of diabetes and prediabetes at an early age. At the same time, the World Health Organization also believes that heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the world and now this danger is not limited only to the elderly.

How can this be stopped?

The biggest problem is that people consider themselves healthy because they do not feel any symptoms. But the hardness and plaque in the arteries continues to grow silently for years. Many times the first sign appears directly in the form of a heart attack or stroke. The good news is that biological age can be changed. Regular aerobic exercise, a balanced diet including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, healthy sleep, and managing depression can improve the elasticity of arteries. Quitting smoking may also show improvement in a few months. The real question is not how old you are, but how healthy your arteries are. If there is a change in this thinking, then many problems related to heart diseases can be avoided.
