Kurds in Iran: Amidst the increasing tension in the Middle East and the ongoing attacks on Iran, another new aspect has emerged in the geopolitical situation. According to the report, Kurdish fighters may be active in the fighting. There are claims that some foreign powers are considering supporting the Kurdish group. This has increased concern inside Iran. In the meantime, let us know who are the Kurds and why is Iran in danger from them?
Who are the Kurds?
Kurds are an ethnic group which has its own distinct language, culture and traditions. Their language belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family and is spoken in several dialects throughout the region. It is said that the Kurdish population worldwide is between 25 million and 45 million. Most of them live in the mountainous areas of Türkiye, Iran, Iraq and Syria. Despite their large population, the Kurds do not have a completely independent country of their own. For many decades, many Kurdish groups have been advocating the creation of an independent country named Kurdistan.
Which countries have Kurdish population?
The Kurdish population is spread across four major Middle East countries. Here they mostly live as an ethnic minority. Türkiye has the largest Kurdish population in the world. Its estimated population is 15 to 20 million. The Kurdish community mostly lives in the south-eastern areas of the country.
The Kurdish population in Iran is estimated to be around 8 to 12 million. This is about 10 percent of the country’s population. Most Iranian Kurds live in the western provinces near the Iraqi border. The Kurdish community in Iraq has achieved the highest level of political autonomy. The Kurdistan Regional Government governs a semi-autonomous region in northern Iraq. There are about one and a half to two and a half million Kurds in Syria. They mostly live in the north-eastern parts of the country.
dream of kurdistan
The demand of the Kurdish people for a separate country dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. After the end of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War, there was a proposal to create an independent Kurdish country. The Treaty of Sevres in 1920 also included rules by which Kurdistan could be created. But geopolitical development and subsequent treaties divided the Kurdish region among surrounding countries. Since then, Kurdish movements in different countries have been demanding more autonomy, political rights or complete independence.
Why is Iran in danger?
The Kurdish population in Iran has long had a difficult relationship with the central government. Many Kurdish groups are Sunni Muslims and Iran’s political system is dominated by Shia leadership. Some Kurdish organizations have accused the government of discrimination and political isolation.
It is being said that if Kurdish groups become actively involved in regional conflicts then they can become a big challenge for Iran. Kurdish fighters already have organized militia and trained forces in the surrounding areas. If Kurdish rebel groups launch coordinated operations from the border area, it could force Iran to deal with external conflicts as well as divert military resources internally.
