New records are made every season in IPL, but there are some records which have stood unbroken for years. One such record is that of hitting the most sixes in an innings, which no Indian player has been able to break till date. This record was made by Murali Vijay 14 years ago.
When Vijay created a blast in Chennai
On April 3, 2010, Murali Vijay played a stormy innings against Rajasthan Royals while playing for Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He scored 127 runs in just 56 balls, which included 11 sixes.
Thanks to his explosive innings, Chennai scored a big score of 246/5 and won the match by 23 runs. At that time it was also counted among the big scores of IPL. The special thing is that this record of 11 sixes in an innings still remains a challenge for Indian players.
Equal after 14 years, but the record still stands
Till now many big names have failed to break this record. Even big hitters like Rohit Sharma, Sanju Samson and Shubman Gill have not been able to reach this figure. However, in IPL 2025, a young player had definitely equaled this record. At the age of just 14, Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored 101 runs in 38 balls and hit 11 sixes. He achieved this feat against Gujarat Titans while playing for Rajasthan Royals.
came close but couldn’t cross
Many batsmen in IPL have come close to this record, but have not been able to break it. Sanju Samson had hit 10 sixes in 2018, while Shubman Gill had hit 10 sixes in 2023. Despite this, it has not been possible for anyone till now to cross the figure of 11 sixes.
Will this record be broken?
Now the question is whether any player will be able to break this record in IPL 2026? This definitely seems possible considering the changing style of T20 cricket and aggressive batting, but Murali Vijay’s record still looks equally strong.
