Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margherita on Thursday claimed that BJP will capture Nazira seat in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia is going to lose his stronghold this time.
While campaigning in Nazira in support of BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain, Margherita said that the ground environment has now changed in favor of the ruling party. He said that the voters of this area now want development and better opportunities by associating with the government.
Margherita said, “The people of Nazira now want to live with the government. They are expecting development and progress and will vote for change this time.” He claimed that BJP is getting strong support in the entire region. It is noteworthy that Nazira has traditionally been a stronghold of Congress.
In the 2016 assembly elections, senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia had retained the seat by a comfortable margin, while the BJP came to power in the state. After this, in the 2021 elections also, Saikia further strengthened his position by defeating BJP candidates.
Debabrata Saikia is currently the Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly and is counted among the prominent leaders of the Congress in the state. He is known for his organizational skills and grassroots hold and has been instrumental in keeping the Congress relevant in Upper Assam despite the growing influence of the BJP.
Saikia is also the son of former Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia, who was a prominent leader of Assam politics and served as Chief Minister several times.
However, despite this political legacy and past electoral performance, BJP believes that anti-incumbency wave and development issues may change the course of the contest on Nazira seat this time. There may be a tough contest on this seat in the elections to be held on April 9.
