The record of hitting most sixes in a single season of IPL is in the name of former West Indies batsman Chris Gayle, who made this record in 2012 while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore. This record still stands today, which Andre Russell came close to breaking in 2019 but could not. You will be surprised to know that in the top-5 list of players who have hit most sixes in an IPL edition, only Gayle’s name is there 3 times, whereas no Indian is included in it.
1. Chris Gayle (59)
The record of hitting most sixes in a single season of IPL is in the name of Chris Gayle. The West Indies player made this record in 2012, in which season he hit a total of 59 sixes while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore. No one has been able to break this record till date. Gayle scored 733 runs in 15 matches that season, in which he scored 1 century and 7 half-centuries.
2. Andre Russell (52)
Andre Russell of West Indies had come close to breaking Chris Gayle’s record, but could not break it. Russell is at second place in the list of people hitting most sixes in one season of IPL. Russell hit a total of 52 sixes while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019.
3. Chris Gayle (51)
Chris Gayle is also at third place in the list, who hit a total of 51 sixes while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. This season, he also made a record of hitting 17 sixes in a single match, and no one has been able to break this record till date. This is the same innings in which he scored a total of 175 runs. This is the biggest individual innings in IPL history.
4. Jos Buttler (45)
English player Jos Buttler is at number four. Butler had hit a total of 45 sixes while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the year 2022. 35-year-old Butler played for Rajasthan from 2018 to 2024, since 2025 he is playing for Gujarat Titans.
5. Chris Gayle (44)
Chris Gayle’s name is in the top-5 list of those who hit most sixes in a season of IPL thrice. At fifth place in the list is the season 2011, when Gayle hit a total of 44 sixes. In this edition also he played for RCB only.
