Generally, while shopping, many times we get better quality goods at a good deal. However, many times, while making payment, the ground slips from under the feet when it is realized that tax is being collected equal to the price. Alex Grossomanides, a personal trainer from Massachusetts, came across similar incidents.
What is the matter?
Alex bought the jacket online from a French company last year. When he got delivery of the jacket in America, he had to pay extra tax of $ 248.04 (about Rs 21000). Alex was very surprised by this. This tax had to be paid because the jacket was made in Myanmar. During that time, 40 percent tariff was being charged on goods coming to America from Myanmar.
Due to this, the burden of extra cost on the coat increased. Alex had to pay the tariff through the shipping company DHP. Let us tell you that the US Supreme Court has declared the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump invalid. With this, a process of refund has started, which is going to be the largest repayment program in American history.
Customers demanded refund
When the case was fought in the US Supreme Court and the International Trade Court, both courts ruled that the tariffs imposed by the US President on goods coming from countries like Myanmar were illegal. Like Alex, some other customers also filed a collective lawsuit against the companies and demanded that the refund they received from the government should be returned to them. The court ruled to give refunds to customers because the tariffs apply to importers, so ordinary customers like Alex will have to return the money.
When will the refund process start?
In March, the US Court of International Trade ordered customs officials to return more than $160 billion (about Rs 13 lakh) deposited by the government. This has given hope to about 330,000 importers of getting some of their money back. Customs officials working on this matter have said that the refund system should be ready to start this month. They have to inform the Court of International Trade about their progress on 14 April.
However, despite the court order, it is not certain that customers like Alex will get the money as these refunds will be given to importers like DHL or other shipping companies. Now, it is a matter of concern as to when the companies will return this money to the customers or keep it with themselves.
