US Iran Peace Talks: Peace talks between America and Iran are currently going on in Islamabad. This ongoing tension in the Middle East has still not stopped. A big issue is coming to the fore at the center of these conversations. Iran demands that the large-scale economic and political sanctions imposed on it should be removed. As part of its 10-point proposal, Tehran has made it clear that removing these sanctions is a pre-condition for things to come.
Primary and secondary restrictions
One of Iran’s biggest demands is the complete removal of both primary and secondary sanctions. Primary sanctions prevent American companies and citizens from doing any kind of business with Iran. Secondary sanctions go one step further. They punish foreign companies and countries that align with Iran. These sanctions have isolated Iran from the global trade network.
Ban on banking and financial system
Iran is also emphasizing on restoring its financial connectivity with the world. This includes removing restrictions on its central bank and regaining access to the global banking system, especially the SWIFT network. Without this access, Iran has faced great difficulties in international transactions.
frozen assets
Another big issue is Iran’s frozen assets abroad. Billions of dollars of Iran are still frozen in foreign banks. Tehran is demanding immediate release of these funds to stabilize its economy.
Ban on oil and energy exports
Iran’s economy largely depends on the export of oil and gas. The ban imposed by the US has limited Iran’s ability to sell crude oil and petrochemical products globally. Removing these bans is Iran’s biggest priority.
Shipping, Port and Industrial Sector
The sanctions have targeted Iran’s shipping industry, port operators and even its automotive sector. These restrictions have disrupted trade-related logistics and industrial development.
United Nations and nuclear sanctions
Iran is demanding withdrawal of sanctions imposed by global bodies such as the United Nations Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Apart from this, it is also demanding formal recognition of its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
In this conversation, Iran is also demanding the withdrawal of American forces from the Middle East, guarantees against future attacks and compensation for the economic losses caused by the sanctions.
